Database Entries

The objective of the Zanzibar Directory of Civil Society Organizations project is to create an accurate, exhaustive, easily-accessible database of all active Zanzibari CSOs.

If you are a representative of a Zanzibari CSO which is listed in this database, please search the database for your organization and verify that the data on your CSO's page is accurate. If there are any errors you wish to correct or updates you wish to make, click on "Help Correct or Complete Data" at the bottom of the page to correct your entry. A request to update your information will be sent to the Ministry of Good Governance, where it will be processed promptly.

If your CSO is not listed in the database, you may request that an entry be created. You must be a CSO Registered with the Zanzibar Registrar General under the Societies Act No.6 of 1995 to be included in this registry.

Please note: if you submitted a questionnaire to the NGO Resource Centre after the deadline of October 31, 2007, it is likely that your questionnaire was received but was not processed. The fastest way to have your information included in the database is to fill out a new questionnaire online.

General Information

Only CSOs registered with the Zanzibar Registrar General under the Societies Act No.6 of 1995 may be included in this database. If you are not currently registered as a CSO in Zanzibar, you may register your organisation in person at the Registrar General's Office, Mambo Msiige building, Kelele Square, Shangani, Stone Town.

Application Procedure for New CSOs

Organisations which are not registered with the Government of Tanzania or the Government of Zanzibar must submit two copies of their constitution and a letter of application addressed to the Registrar General. Your organisation's constitution must conform to the Schedule on page 29 of the Societies Act (see below). After a period of two weeks, a representative must return to the Registrar General's Office to verify the status of their application. If the application has been accepted, the organisation must submit an additional three copies of their constitution with spiral binding, and they must pay all the relevant fees (detailed below). The whole process takes no less than one month.

Application Procedure for CSOs Already Registered with the Government of Tanzania

Organisations which are already registered with the Government of Tanzania and which wish to open a branch office in Zanzibar must submit three certified copies of their constitution, three certified copies of their registration certificate, and a letter of application addressed to the Registrar General. Moreover, if the chosen director of the organisation's Zanzibar branch is not Tanzanian, the organisation must submit the chosen director's letter of appointment from the organisation's head office, as well as a passport-sized photo of the chosen director and the chosen director's Curriculum Vitae.
